Quel nouveaux dangers et vulnérabilités découlent des innovations dans le domaine de la biologie synthétique ? Comment y répondre ? Pour éclairer le ministère de la Défense à ce sujet, un rapport vient d’être publié aux Etats-Unis par l’Académie des sciences, The National Académies of sciences, engineering, médecine.
Les technologies mises au point pour modifier ou créer de nouveaux organismes ou composants biologiques qui n’existent pas dans la nature, peuvent voir leurs objectifs initiaux – améliorer la santé humaine, animale et l’environnement – détournés. Lutter contre les maladies, améliorer les rendements agricoles ou lutter contre la pollution constituent des objectifs légitimes. Mais comment se prémunir contre des intentions malveillantes susceptibles de nuire aux humains, aux autres espèces et aux écosystèmes? Sans oublier le spectre de la création d’armes biologique. C’est l’enjeu de la réflexion initiée par ce premier rapport, publié le 21 aout dernier.
Les préoccupations concernant les armes biologiques, rappellent les auteurs, ne sont pas nouvelles, Pour différencier les enjeux de la biologie synthétique, ils cherchent à apporter, dans ce premier rapport intermédiaire, des réponses à quatre principales questions :
- ” Will existing civilian and military public health infrastructure and mitigation approaches to minimize morbidity and mortality be effective against an attack using this technology?

Are there currently effective medical countermeasures available for an attack using this technology, or would it be possible to quickly develop vaccines, drugs, or antitoxins to mitigate the spread and impact of the agent over the longer term?

Would the effectiveness of those mitigation approaches rely on knowing how an agent was created?

Would it be possible to understand the genotype, phenotype, or chemical composition of the agent, to inform how its effect can be mitigated?“
Des données plus précises sont attendues à l’occasion de la publication du rapport final : “In its final report, the committee will use this framework, revising it as needed, as a tool to provide the U.S. Department of Defense with an assessment of the concerns presented by synthetic biology technologies and applications, as well as the possibilities for mitigation, by considering the factors presented here and developing informed answers to questions such as those posed in this interim report“.
